BA for

A Chartered Manager in the education sector is someone who can take responsibility for people, projects, operations and/or services to deliver long term organisational success in a large school or college, a Multi Academy Trust or group of schools, or a university. With this comes the professional recognition of the manager’s ability to deliver impact, behave ethically and demonstrate their commitment to continual learning and development. The degree apprenticeship route means your employer and/or the government will pay your tuition fees whilst you continue in full-time employment.

Who is this course for?

This programme, designed in collaboration with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), and regional and national employers, is for those looking to gain the knowledge and skills needed to become a confident management professional in the education sector. You will learn: the principles that underpin core areas of business; ethical and sustainable business practices; entrepreneurship and business planning; skills such as project planning, team working and self-presentation.

Course content

Organisations and Culture

Level 4. 20 Credits.
A broad introduction to organisations and their environments with a focus on organisational culture and its impact on strategy and organisational performance. Consideration will also be given to how create cultures that support organisational values and objectives.

Developing Self and Others

Level 4. 20 Credits.
The development of self-awareness and awareness of others through an understanding of emotional and social intelligence in order to support working collaboratively. Key skills in self-management and reflective learning will also be considered, as additional key elements that underpin the complete learning journey of the programme.

Managing Stakeholder Relations

Level 4. 20 Credits.
To enable the identification of internal and external (e.g. customers, suppliers, other) stakeholders of the organisation and their relative power and influence with a view to managing stakeholder inclusivity in objective setting and impact management.

Marketing and Communications

Level 4. 20 Credits.
Understanding the principles of marketing to identify your organisation’s customers and how to communicate your organisation’s offering to them, digitally and in other forms. Ways in which communications are managed within the workplace to support organisational objectives, and how communications can be used to develop, support and enhance relationships with other external stakeholders, will also be considered.

Accounting for Decision Making

Level 4. 20 Credits.
An introduction to key accounting concepts and language in order for financial data to be understood and used as a basis to inform management decisions at an operational level.

Management Practice – Negotiated Study

Level 4. 20 Credits.
A project negotiated between the apprentice, employer and employment link tutor, focusing on a critical analysis of an aspect of management practice within the apprentice’s immediate work context.

Project Management Skills

Level 5. 20 Credits.
To enable the development of skills necessary to lead a team to achieve set objectives within resource and time constraints while mitigating potential risks.

Managerial Decision Making

Level 5. 20 Credits.
Developing an understanding of the challenges and skills of making difficult decisions that must be made to support organisational objectives, and how effective and consistent communication can help the decision-making process.

Managing People and Performance

Level 5. 20 Credits.
Understanding the activities, processes and techniques that maintain and improve employee commitment and performance in line with organisational objectives and commitments to equality, diversity and staff welfare. The role of different leadership styles and their contribution to performance management will also be considered.

Personal and Professional Development

Level 5. 20 Credits.
To enable apprentices to further develop their self-awareness and reflective thinking in order to identify and evaluate their personal abilities in the context of enhancing their performance and their future manager/leader aspirations, leading to the formulation of strategies for continued personal and professional self-development.

Managing Operations in the Digital Environment

Level 5. 20 Credits.
Examining the value-adding activities of organisations and how digitisation in the wider external environment may impact these activities and, conversely, how further value could be created through embracing digitisation.

Reflective Leaders – Negotiated Study

Level 5. 20 Credits.
A project negotiated between the apprentice, employer and employment link tutor, focusing on an analysis of the wider organisational and environmental aspects of the apprentice’s immediate work context and the implications of this for future aspiring leaders of the organisation.

Ethical Leadership in the Workplace

Level 6. 20 Credits.
Developing an appreciation of ethics in an organisational context and how ethical leaders instil ethical principles throughout organisations in ways which promote responsible behaviour to stakeholders while taking into account that stakeholders may hold different, culturally-informed, sets of ethical values.

Analytics for Management Decision Making

Level 6. 20 Credits.
Developing an understanding of the increasingly important and complex role of data and analytics in the management decision-making process. Various contextual factors – such as decision impact, data availability, organizational culture, diverse types of managers, analytics maturity and different roles of data and human judgement – will be explored.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Level 6. 20 Credits.
Identifying opportunities for new practices and processes to be practically implemented within an organisation, and how creativity and entrepreneurial spirit can be encouraged and harnessed in order to promote such idea generation and innovation.

Strategic Change Management

Level 6. 20 Credits.
Developing an understanding of key theories and concepts of the management and leadership of deliberate strategic change within organisations. Drivers of strategic change and the various types and directions of strategic change that may be available to organisations will be explored, as well as approaches to the design and implementation of change initiatives and interventions. The leadership qualities and capabilities required to successfully drive through strategic change, including in times of uncertainty, will also be explored.

Professional Management and Leadership Practice – Negotiated Study

Level 6. 40 Credits.
A project negotiated between the apprentice, employer and employment link tutor, focusing on the identification and analysis of a cross-functional/cross-departmental issue or challenge and communication of findings and recommended solutions to key decision-makers/stakeholders.
